How to choose a web design agency: questions to ask

3 min read Marketing · Web Design

The questions to ask an agency before commissioning a website, and a way to compare quotes on equal terms.

Define the site's job first

Before you start looking for an agency, write down in one sentence what the site is for. Should it make the phone ring, book appointments, collect quote requests or sell directly? That sentence lets you read quotes from different agencies on the same scale.

You can turn the result you expect into a sum as well: monthly leads = monthly visitors × the share of visitors who leave an enquiry. Ads and search largely decide the number of visitors. The share depends on the site itself, and it is the number good design grows.

Questions to ask the agency

Ask for clear answers to these questions in the meeting. Is the site built on a ready-made template or designed from scratch? Will you be able to change text and images yourself after launch, and is there a panel for that? In whose name will the domain, the hosting account and the source code be registered? How will mobile speed be measured, and what value is the target at handover?

Your own site statistics show how many of your visitors come from a phone. If that share is high, mobile speed becomes one of the most important measures of the site. We cover how the mobile side is built in how to build a mobile-friendly website.

How to look at a portfolio

Open the agency's work on your own phone. How long does the page take to load, is the menu easy to use, can the form be filled in without trouble? A site that looks good but loads slowly loses some of its visitors on the first screen.

Check whether the reference sites are still live and what exactly the agency did on each. Did they only design it, or did they also set up the content, search visibility and measurement? Those are separate jobs, and a large part of the price gap between quotes comes from them.

Search and measurement belong in the handover

Making a new site findable in search engines and AI answers gets expensive if it is treated as a job for after the design. Page titles, URL structure, structured data, speed and redirects from old URLs to new ones should be planned from the start. If old URLs are not redirected, the search traffic the old site built up over the years does not carry over.

The same goes for measurement: form submissions, phone clicks and WhatsApp messages should be counted from launch day. That is why search visibility and AI search visibility are planned together with the site's architecture.

Comparing quotes

Before ranking quotes by price, write down what each one covers in a single table: design, copywriting, translation, animation, admin panel, SEO setup, measurement and the length of post-launch support. Once the scope is equal, most of the price differences explain themselves.

If you will need sales tools that calculate prices, book appointments or collect applications, add them to the table too; a tool planned from the start fits the site's structure more easily. We look at the work in four layers, and the site is the surface layer: the place where the person brought by ads and search arrives. We describe our own approach on the story-led website page.
