Which is the best AI? A guide to choosing the right tool

There is no single best AI; it depends on the job. Which tools to look at for writing, research, code and images, and how to decide.

The short answer

There is no single answer to "which AI is best". Leading companies ship new models every few weeks and the rankings change often. In the first days of September 2026 alone, OpenAI announced GPT-6 Astra, Anthropic released Claude Fable 5.1 and Google launched Gemini 3.8 Flash. The real question is which one is best for your work.

Choosing by task

  • General chat, writing and everyday tasks: ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Anthropic's Claude are the most widely used general assistants. All three are strong at writing, summarizing, translation and ideas; they differ in style and in the ecosystem they connect to.
  • Research and current information: tools that search the web and link to the pages they drew on (Perplexity, ChatGPT search, Gemini) are more reliable for current topics.
  • Code: Claude, GPT and Gemini models stand out for coding, and coding agents that work in the terminal or editor speed this up further.
  • Images and video: Midjourney and the big assistants' own image tools lead for images, and models such as Google's Veo for video.
  • By ecosystem: Gemini is built into Google Workspace, Copilot into Microsoft 365 and Meta AI into WhatsApp and Instagram. The assistant that comes with tools you already use is often the path of least effort.

How to decide

There is a more reliable method than comparison tables: pick three real tasks from your own work (a customer email, a report summary, a social post) and give the same task to two or three tools. Check the quality of the writing, whether it invents facts (hallucination) and how much editing the answer needs. After a week, the one you keep going back to is usually the honest answer.

If you work with company data

Read the data policies before pasting sensitive content such as customer details, contracts or financial data into free consumer versions. Business plans usually commit not to use your data for model training and offer admin controls. Sending personal data to a service abroad also needs a separate privacy assessment.
