What is digitalization? How it differs from transformation

Digitalization means reorganizing how a business or institution works so that its processes run on digital tools. Orders entered into a system instead of a notebook, appointments booked online instead of by phone, invoices issued electronically and customer questions answered over WhatsApp or the website are everyday examples.

Three terms are often confused, and they can be seen as steps on a ladder:

• Digitization: converting information on paper into digital form, such as scanning invoices or moving a customer list into Excel.
• Digitalization: running business processes with digital tools, such as an order coming in through a system and automatically reducing stock.
• Digital transformation: redesigning the business itself, its model and its customer relationships around digital possibilities, such as a store only business moving to an online subscription model.

Most customers are online. In Turkey, DataReportal counted internet users at 88.3 percent of the population at the end of 2025. Customers search for products on their phones, compare prices and ask questions by message. A business that has not digitalized stays invisible for most of that journey. Inside the business the gap is large too: manual records invite errors, and a process you cannot measure you cannot improve.

• Start with the one process that wastes the most time, such as preparing quotes, booking appointments or answering customer questions.
• Simplify the process first, then choose tools; moving a messy process online only speeds up the mess.
• Connect ready made tools: most businesses need a workflow that links the right tools rather than software built from scratch.
• Measure: when you can see the time and outcome of each step, you know what works.
