What is a qanat? The water channel behind our name

A qanat is a channel system that gathers groundwater and carries it to the surface, to where it is needed. It emerged on the Iranian plateau and has been in use for about 3,000 years. The same structure goes by other names elsewhere: kariz in Afghanistan and Pakistan, falaj in Oman, foggara in North Africa. In Anatolia it is known as kehriz.

In 2016 UNESCO added eleven qanats in Iran to the World Heritage List as the Persian Qanat.

At the foot of a mountain, a deep mother well is dug down to the water-bearing layer. From there a tunnel with a very gentle slope is dug toward the plain. Vertical shafts drop into the tunnel at intervals; they are used to remove soil during digging, for ventilation and later for maintenance. The water flows by gravity alone, with no pump or energy, and comes out at the mouth of the tunnel.

Because the channel runs underground, little water is lost to evaporation in the heat. It reaches the fields from its source without shrinking on the way.

A qanat does not create water. It finds water that is already there, draws the right path for it and carries it without loss. Too steep a slope and the water erodes the tunnel; too shallow and it will not flow. The craft lies in reading the land correctly.

Sharing is organised as well. The people who use a qanat often divide its water by the hour and maintain it together. What keeps a qanat alive is that shared rule as much as the technique.

• Scarcity: The qanat was born where water was scarce. We think the biggest problems of the future will turn on water, energy, land and scarce digital products, and we build our work facing that way.
