Mistral's model comes to Firefox Smart Window
Mozilla is adding Mistral Small 4 to Smart Window, Firefox's AI browsing mode, and opening the beta in France with French support.
What was announced?
Mozilla and Mistral AI announced a partnership on September 16. Mistral Small 4 is coming to Firefox's Smart Window beta as a new model option for users in the US and Canada. Smart Window beta access is also opening in France with French-language support. Mozilla plans to expand to more European countries later this year, and Mistral says the United Kingdom and Germany are next.
What does Smart Window do?
Smart Window is an optional window type in Firefox with a built-in AI assistant. The assistant works with your open tabs and browsing history. It helps you make sense of a complex search, remember something important from a page you closed and pull together information from your tabs. Users can still pick models other than Mistral.
Privacy and choice
According to Mistral's announcement, conversations are not saved on Mozilla's servers by default and Mistral has agreed to zero data retention. Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo said a browser should not be a one-way funnel and should leave people free to decide where to go next. Arthur Mensch, Mistral's co-founder and CEO, said the partnership brings privacy, control and choice to AI-powered browsing.
