In a September 15 interview with Reuters, Bill Gates said going full speed ahead on AI is not the complete answer and that some degree of slowing down may be important. He called it a dual-sided technology, a notable shift in tone for someone long known for tech optimism.
Governments are not ready
Gates said no government is nearly as deep on AI as it needs to be. He made his case for international cooperation with a movie analogy: when aliens arrive, even rival countries work together. He added that AI systems work like gigantic statistical machines that we do not really understand.
The equity warning
The same day, the Gates Foundation pledged more than $1 billion to widen access to AI. Gates wrote that, if not shaped well, AI could become the worst source of injustice.
