ChatGPT adds visual ads alongside image generation
OpenAI is adding an image-based ad format to ChatGPT. The first test runs while users generate images, starting in the US later in October with a group of advertisers.
What happened
On October 5 OpenAI added a visual format to ChatGPT's ad products. The new ads appear next to images users generate in ChatGPT. Testing starts later in October in the US only, with an initial group of advertisers; OpenAI says it plans to expand further.
How it works
ChatGPT ads have so far been text-based, part of a program launched earlier this year. The visual format lets brands show product inspiration, a product in use or the experience around a service. OpenAI promises two things: ads are clearly labeled, and they do not influence ChatGPT's answers or generated images. The ad sits beside the image, not inside it.
Measurement and brand safety
OpenAI widened its attribution partners to AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin, added conversion-data integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp, and will run geo-based incrementality tests with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic. DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are piloting brand-suitability evaluations.
Attribution and incrementality
Attribution tools track whether someone who saw an ad later installed an app or bought something. Incrementality asks the harder question of whether the sale would have happened anyway, usually by showing ads in some regions and not others. Expanding both signals that OpenAI wants ChatGPT ads in performance budgets, not just test budgets.
Why now
Image generation is one of ChatGPT's most used features and it reveals intent: someone mocking up a sofa in their living room or designing a product shot is close to a purchase. Competition from assistants such as Meta's Muse is rising, and visual ads may also nudge free users toward ad-free paid plans.
What's next
The first results will come from test advertisers from late October. No date has been given for markets outside the US.
Background
ChatGPT began showing text ads earlier this year and expanded them to seven Asian markets in September. Visual ads are the next step in turning the assistant into a full advertising platform alongside its subscription business.
What it means for your business
AI assistants are becoming ad inventory, and the first visual slot opens at the moment someone imagines something. If your product sells visually, prepare simple in-use imagery and end-to-end conversion tracking now; early entrants usually learn at lower cost.
