HackerRank's AI interviewer Chakra is now generally available

3 min read News · Models

After a six-month beta and more than 500,000 interviews, Chakra merges screening, take-home and engineer rounds into one session, with 70-80% fewer suspicious-activity flags.

What happened

HackerRank made its AI interviewer Chakra generally available on October 5 after a six-month beta in which it ran more than 500,000 interviews. Early customers include Snowflake, Snorkel and Capgemini.

What changes

Developer hiring usually involves a screening test, a take-home assignment and an engineer interview, often over weeks. Chakra combines all three into one sitting: it talks with the candidate, has them write code, questions their approach and produces a report.

Cheating

AI coding assistants made online test cheating easy. HackerRank says suspicious-activity flags are 70-80% lower with Chakra, because candidates must explain their reasoning under follow-up questions.

Concerns

AI in hiring raises fairness and transparency questions. The EU AI Act treats hiring systems as high risk, with extra transparency and human oversight duties. Demand for AI skills is rising: Robert Half data shows 72% of managers plan to pay a premium for them.

What's next

AI interviewers are likely to become standard in technical hiring and spread to non-technical roles.

Who HackerRank is

HackerRank is one of the most widely used platforms for assessing developers' coding skills, used by thousands of employers and millions of developers. A launch at its scale suggests technical hiring could become AI-assisted broadly and quickly.

For candidates

Candidates get a faster process without multi-day take-home tasks, but a more demanding interview: they must justify every choice. Using AI coding assistants well is now expected, and understanding and defending the code they produce becomes the skill being measured.

Why speed matters

Long hiring loops lose strong candidates to faster employers and consume engineers' time. Compressing three rounds into one session lets teams decide in days rather than weeks.

What it means for your business

Simplify hiring stages so good candidates don't drop out, keep final decisions with people, tell candidates when AI is used, and invest in your team's AI skills.
