TikTok launches an AI shopping assistant and one-click checkout
TikTok unveiled a conversational shopping assistant and Buy Direct, which lets users buy from brands without leaving the feed. Both start in the US.
What happened
On October 5 TikTok announced a conversational AI shopping assistant and Buy Direct, a one-click checkout that lets people buy straight from a brand inside the For You feed. Both roll out first to US users and brands, under an initiative TikTok calls Agentic Commerce.
What the assistant does
TikTok says the assistant understands context and remembers preferences through a conversation, answering questions about product details, shipping, sizing and availability, and helping complete the purchase. A viewer can ask whether a jacket from a video comes a size up and how fast it ships, without browsing store pages.
What Buy Direct changes
Buy Direct opens in-feed purchasing to brands outside the TikTok Shop marketplace; the order goes directly to the brand. It is built with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe, so brands can connect their existing stores and payments.
Why it matters
Social commerce loses most buyers in the steps after discovery: click, site, sign-up, payment. TikTok's stated aim is to remove every step between seeing a product and owning it. With ChatGPT adding visual ads the same week, the whole journey from discovery to payment is moving inside AI agents.
What agentic commerce means
In agentic commerce an AI agent runs part or all of the purchase for the user: they describe what they want, the agent finds it, answers questions and pays. It only works if stores expose product, stock and shipping data in a form agents can read, which is why partners such as Shopify and Stripe matter.
What's next
Both tools start in a limited US test; no timeline has been given for other markets.
Background
TikTok Shop has grown into a major marketplace in the US and Southeast Asia, but many brands sell outside it. Buy Direct brings those brands into in-feed checkout without forcing them onto the marketplace.
What it means for your business
Your product pages are now read by shopping agents as well as people. Keep sizes, stock, delivery times and returns clean, current and machine-readable, and run your store on connectable systems such as Shopify or Stripe so you can join these channels quickly.
