OpenAI offers university labs free access to GPT-Rosalind

3 min read News · Science

OpenAI's Rosalind Academic Plan gives eligible US university labs up to 30 free seats for 12 months and access to GPT-Rosalind. OpenAI is also giving $5 million to a Simons Foundation effort to examine AI-produced maths.

What happened

On 15 October OpenAI announced the Rosalind Academic Plan, giving eligible US university labs up to 30 free Business Standard seats for up to 12 months plus access to GPT-Rosalind, its life sciences model launched on 16 April 2026. The same day it said it will contribute $5 million to a Simons Foundation initiative helping mathematicians examine AI-produced results.

What the plan covers

GPT-Rosalind runs in the Rosalind Workbench for medicinal chemistry, genomics and wet-lab assistance. Target areas include drug and protein design, disease detection, vaccines, genetic and RNA therapies, agriculture, ecology and antimicrobial resistance. API access is excluded.

Who can apply

A principal investigator applies and manages members. Approval requires institutional verification, a background review of lab leadership and a designated safety contact, plus trusted-access approval for GPT-Rosalind. OpenAI says it does not train on research data shared through the plan by default.

Background

Biology is the area of highest dual-use concern in AI safety, since the same knowledge can help build a vaccine or a harmful agent, which is why access is gated.

What rivals do

Google DeepMind pioneered the field with AlphaFold and its free protein structure database. Anthropic built life sciences connectors and research programmes for Claude, and Meta's Muse Spark drew attention with maths papers. Offering academics access lets companies test models on real problems and shape the tools future researchers use.

The maths side

AI models have recently produced notable results on open maths problems, but verifying them takes expert effort. The Simons funding supports the people doing that work.

What comes next

OpenAI has not said whether the plan will extend beyond the United States. Universities with existing OpenAI Enterprise agreements use their institutional route instead.

What it means for your business

Watch for models trained for your sector, consider joint projects with university teams that have access to these tools, and confirm in writing whether any AI service will train on your research data.
