On September 17, King Charles III hosted a private AI summit at Dumfries House in Scotland. About 30 tech executives, policymakers and ethics researchers attended, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Google DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis, executives from OpenAI and Anthropic, the UK minister for AI, and Paolo Benanti, who advises the Vatican on AI.
What was discussed
The question was whether frontier AI development needs a shared set of guiding principles. Safety, human dignity and democratic stability were on the table. The King warned the leaders of existential dangers and recalled the message he sent to the first AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in 2023.
Not binding
No binding agreement was expected; the meeting was designed as a dialogue on principles and cooperation. A few days later, more than 20 countries called for binding safety measures at the UN General Assembly.
