3.2 GW power contract for an OpenAI data center nears decision
The Effingham County contract terms are trade secrets, and one commissioner said its scale is far larger than usual.
The process
Under 2025 rules, Georgia Power must file data center contracts above 100 MW at least 30 days before signing. The staff deadline for this 3.2 GW contract in Effingham County was extended 12 days to August 26, one day before the commission's energy committee met.
Objections
The terms are trade secrets and Commissioner Peter Hubbard said the released document was "fully redacted." He called the scale "far larger than what we typically approve." Staff secured a further guarantee that costs won't be shifted to other customers.
