Nvidia and Google want faster grid hookups for flexible AI
Nvidia, Google and Emerald AI formed an alliance so AI data centers that cut power use at peak hours can connect to the grid faster.
What was formed
On September 18, Nvidia, Google and Emerald AI launched the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA). The pitch is simple: AI data centers that commit to cutting power use during peak hours should get connected to the grid faster.
Why it is needed
New US data centers can wait a decade or more for a grid connection. The alliance says the grid runs at about 50% utilisation on average because it was built for flat, static demand. If AI data centers ran flexibly at peak hours, 100 GW of extra capacity could open up on existing US infrastructure.
How it would work
Flexibility would come from batteries, on-site generation and software that slows, pauses or shifts less urgent computing. Facilities would stay online through brief grid disturbances. The alliance wants to standardise technical requirements, performance metrics and data sharing, and to seek regulatory incentives that reward grid-responsive operation.
