Trump dismisses calls for AI guardrails

Speaking to reporters at his Doonbeg golf resort in Ireland over the weekend, Trump said the warnings were exaggerated. Guardrails could be put in place, he said, but there are a lot of negative forces involved, and the country that wins the AI race will gain an enormous geopolitical advantage.

On Monday he went further on Truth Social, writing that the only control or guardrails AI needs is a strong and smart, high IQ president, and that the US has that in spades. He called the idea of AI taking over the world and destroying humanity a hoax, and accused Amodei of pretending to be a perfect little angel.

Vice President JD Vance said he is concerned by AI leaders' warnings but wants regulation done smartly, and he was sceptical of companies asking the government to regulate them. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for a briefing with top officials. House Speaker Mike Johnson said he expects Trump to meet with the heads of AI companies, with no date set yet.
