What is social media marketing? A strategy for 2026
Social media marketing is using content and ads on social platforms to reach business goals. Here is how to build a strategy that pays off.
What is social media marketing?
Social media marketing is reaching a brand's goals by publishing content, managing a community and running ads on platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn and X. The goal may be sales, leads, awareness or customer service, and the strategy changes with it.
The audience is large. In Turkey, for example, DataReportal's Digital 2026 report counted 62.3 million social media user identities in October 2025, 70.9 percent of the population, and IAB Turkey's 2024 figures show social media ads made up more than 47 percent of digital ad spending.
Organic and paid
Organic posts build community and trust, but platform algorithms limit organic reach. Paid ads reach the right person at the right moment, measurably. A good strategy uses both: content that works organically gets amplified with ads, and interest from ads is nurtured with organic content.
How to build a strategy
- Pick a goal and a metric: instead of "more followers", aim for a set number of leads or sales per month.
- Choose platforms by audience: go deep on the one or two platforms where your customers actually spend time rather than being everywhere.
- Define content themes: a few recurring types, such as educational posts, product, customer reviews and behind the scenes, make production easier.
- Keep a regular publishing calendar: consistency delivers more reliable results than one off viral hits.
- Manage the community: replying quickly to comments and messages is customer service on social media.
- Measure and adjust: look at saves, shares, site clicks and conversions more than likes.
What is AI changing?
AI tools speed up content ideas, draft copy, video captions and testing of ad variations. The brand's voice, real customer stories and trust are still human work. AI content published without review risks both mistakes and looking like everyone else.
