A Google Ads agency sets up a business's ad account across Google Search, Maps and YouTube, decides which searches the ads appear for, measures conversions and moves budget towards what works. The ad budget is paid to Google and the management fee to the agency; keep the two figures separate. The ad account should be opened in the business's name, with the agency given access. Agencies work by linking client accounts to their own manager account; when that link is removed, the account stays with you, along with its history and conversion settings. If the ads run from the agency's own account instead, you can lose all that data when you change agency. ## Questions to ask in the first meeting - How will you measure conversions: will forms, phone calls and WhatsApp messages be counted separately? - How often will you read the search terms report and cut irrelevant searches? - Which figures will the report show: spend, number of enquiries, cost per enquiry? - Will I have access to the account too, and can I see the change history? - Is read-only access enough for you to audit the current account? ## How are management fees set? There are three common fee models: - **Fixed monthly fee:** the scope is defined and the fee does not rise on its own as the budget grows. - **Fee tied to ad spend:** the fee grows with the budget; because that can create a pull towards spending more, the scope should be written down. - **Results-based fee:** part of the fee is tied to the number of enquiries or sales, which only works if measurement is set up properly from the start. What really moves the price is the number of campaigns, the campaign types to manage (Search, Performance Max, YouTube), ad copy and creative production, how often you get reports, and whether conversion tracking needs to be set up.
