Mozilla and Mistral AI announced a partnership on September 16. Mistral Small 4 is coming to Firefox's Smart Window beta as a new model option for users in the US and Canada. Smart Window beta access is also opening in France with French-language support. Mozilla plans to expand to more European countries later this year, and Mistral says the United Kingdom and Germany are next. ## What does Smart Window do? Smart Window is an optional window type in Firefox with a built-in AI assistant. The assistant works with your open tabs and browsing history. It helps you make sense of a complex search, remember something important from a page you closed and pull together information from your tabs. Users can still pick models other than Mistral. ## Privacy and choice According to Mistral's announcement, conversations are not saved on Mozilla's servers by default and Mistral has agreed to zero data retention. Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo said a browser should not be a one-way funnel and should leave people free to decide where to go next. Arthur Mensch, Mistral's co-founder and CEO, said the partnership brings privacy, control and choice to AI-powered browsing. ## Why it matters Search and AI assistants are moving into the same browser window.
