Only contribution to generating the answer counts, not being linked. ## What happened Google is testing payments to publishers whose content is used in its AI features. In a pilot that surfaced in late September and that Google confirmed as early-stage, invited publishers see an AI contribution report in Search Console showing how much their content contributed to AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini answers and what they earned each month. ## What counts Only contribution to generating an answer is paid. Being shown as a link, or being used to confirm a fact after the answer is written, does not qualify. Google has not explained how it defines significant contribution or calculates payouts. ## The numbers The Information put participation at about 100 publishers; Digiday said at least dozens had been approached. One participant reportedly earned more than $1 million over a year, another about $50,000 to $60,000. Some called early payments small next to lost ad revenue. ## Background AI answers resolve questions on the results page, which means fewer clicks for the sites that wrote the content, known as zero-click search. Publishers report traffic losses and some have sued. The pilot is Google's first concrete step to keep content creators inside the system. ## Why it matters For two decades the deal was content for traffic. Direct payment could shift value from clicks to how much AI relies on a page, favoring original, reference-grade information. Google is also testing a Dive deeper feature in Discover that publishers fear could cut traffic further. ## What others do OpenAI and Anthropic have signed flat licensing deals with large media groups for archive access, and some AI search startups tried sharing ad revenue with cited publishers. Google's pilot differs by tying payment to measured contribution to each answer, the first large test of a usage-based model where content earns more the more it is used. ## What it means for your business Publish what only you know, such as price ranges, processes and real customer questions.
