New default settings that Cloudflare announced in July took effect on September 15. The company sorts AI bots into three groups. Search bots crawl and index content so they can answer questions about it later. Agent bots visit a page on a person's behalf, usually to get something done right away. Training bots collect content to train a model. Under the new setup, training and agent bots are blocked by default on pages that show ads, while search bots are still allowed. Cloudflare says an ad signals that the site owner meant the page for a person to see. Defaults on pages without ads did not change. ## Who is affected? The new defaults apply to domains newly added to Cloudflare. According to TechCrunch, existing sites on the free plan are covered as well. Paid customers who had already configured their settings keep them. Site owners can manage these choices in the security settings of the Cloudflare dashboard. ## What about Googlebot? Mixed-use bots are the most debated part. Cloudflare counts Googlebot, Applebot and Bingbot as mixed-use, because they crawl for both search and training under the same identity. Cloudflare allows or blocks a mixed-use bot according to all of its behaviors. So ad pages that block training bots are closed to mixed-use bots too. Google, for its part, offers Google-Extended, a separate setting that turns off model training without affecting search results. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince said that most internet traffic is no longer human and that the company has to act faster. Cloudflare wants mixed-use bots to separate search from agent use and training. ## What it means for your site If your site uses Cloudflare and shows ads, check the settings.
