# ChatGPT now works inside Microsoft Word, even on free

OpenAI put ChatGPT inside Microsoft Word through an add-in. From October 1 it will be on by default for business workspaces.

## What arrived

On September 17, OpenAI embedded ChatGPT in Microsoft Word through an add-in. It works on every ChatGPT plan, including Free, and the same add-in already brings ChatGPT to Excel and PowerPoint.

## What it does

From a sidebar, users can draft, revise, summarise and format documents. They can ask questions about the open document, turn notes into a first draft or rewrite a section for a different reader. OpenAI warns that complex tables and charts may need manual fixes and that ChatGPT can change content you meant to keep, so it suggests saving a copy before big edits.

## For companies

From October 1 the add-in will be on by default. Workspace admins can turn it off in the ChatGPT admin console, and Microsoft 365 admins must also allow it before employees see it. With a second assistant next to Microsoft's own Copilot in the same document, companies should recheck which data goes to which model.
